Laura Silverman

I am a visual artist from Baltimore, Maryland. I’ve been painting and drawing for over 10 years, and just received my Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting from the American College of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, France.

My work is a reflection on finding one’s place in the world. My landscapes and cityscapes depict scenes often overlooked in everyday life, like small alleys with trash or fields of grass, so the viewer has the experience of a local inhabitant and appreciates these opportunities of sunlight and beauty in the mundane. I am curious about the natural biology of towns and cities. I investigate the ways in which plants, nature, and ecology are intertwined within the landscape, and how the local environment shapes one’s identity.

Through my self-portraits, I am able to explore the intersections and multi-facets of my identity, my corporeality, and the notion of place at a life-size scale. I investigate how my body takes up space in a certain place, and more broadly, in society. I am interested in subverting the traditional narratives of the reclining female nude and the male gaze, while exploring vulnerability through the body. I experiment with different stages of private spaces and intimacy through the idea of the gaze. I pursue a level of abstraction of space, consequently, the spaces I create blur the lines between reality and imagination.
